Travel Foundation to run events on tourism and climate change

The Travel Foundation is to run a series of events exploring climate change and its impact on tourism this year. The first event on March 16 will look at how climate change is having an impact on holiday destinations, with the latest findings presented by Oxford University senior research associate Dr Murray C Simpson.

The forum will focus on ways in which travel companies can reduce their carbon footprint and help destinations benefit from tourism. Other guest speakers include Hugo Kimber of the Carbon Consultancy and train expert Mark Smith, who runs the Man in Seat 61 website. Later in the year, similar events will tackle water and energy conservation and how sustainable products will shape the future of tourism.

Travel Foundation chief executive Sue Hurdle said: "Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the travel industry over the coming years, and the best way to ensure a profitable and sustainable future for the industry in response is for us to work together to find appropriate solutions."These events aim to bring people from all types of travel companies together to discuss the issues. And they are designed not only to highlight the latest findings, but also to share practical ways to address them."
