Tiger population in India increases to 1706
The census, conducted over one year from December 2009 and December 2010 at a cost of Rs 9.1 crore, was a massive exercise involving 4.7 lakh forest personnel along with a number of wildlife activists who scanned over 45,000 sq km of the country's forest areas.
The number of tigers is estimated at 1706, said Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh while releasing the All India Tiger Estimation Exercise for 2010.
