Snow disrupts flights to east coast of US

Flights to the east coast of the US have been disrupted and cancelled following heavy snow.

Severe weather warnings were issued along the eastern seaboard and up to a foot of snow was expected to fall on New York and parts of New England.

British Airways said most flights to and from Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington were cancelled today, and urged travellers to check the status of flights before leaving for the airport.

Virgin Atlantic said its flights to Boston and New York were affected, but it hoped to resume a full flying programme on Monday.

The airline said: “We offer our sincere apologies for the inconvenience and disappointment this situation has caused, especially to those passengers who were rebooked from last week's cancelled flights, to and from New York and Boston today.

“We are hoping the east coast snow will be cleared by Monday 27 December when we will resume our full flying programme.”
