Forest Department Steps up Eco-Tourism Plans for Goa
Setting up of tented accommodation at the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary and an information centre at the Netravali wildlife sanctuary are expected to boost the forest department's plans to promote eco-tourism in protected areas.
While some facilities are already available at Cotigao, Colem and Bondla, the forest department's eco-tourism division is considering the Mhadei region for the first time.
"We plan to put up four tents and a nature trail at Mhadei," conservator, eco-tourism and wildlife, D N Carvalho, told TOI. Mhadei wildlife sanctuary is a 208.48 km {+2} protected area in the Western Ghats and is located in Sattari taluka.
At Cotigao, there is already a nature trail which attracts students and teachers. There is also a watch tower to facilitate nature lovers witness its bounty. The Mainapi and Savri waterfalls also seem to be a major attraction.
At Netraveli, the forest department's eco-tourism division has begun the process of setting up basic infrastructure for the staff like an office, staff quarters which will be followed up by an information centre. The Netraveli wildlife sanctuary is located in eastern Goa and is contiguous to the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary. Many animals like the Black Panther, giant squirrels and slender loris are found there.
Carvalho said that in Collem, tented accommodation is available to those who wish to stay. One can even spot wild animals early morning and late evening, he added.
Meanwhile, the animals at Bondla zoo will have a wider space. Carvalho said that as per a master plan which has been approved in principle by the government, there will be bigger cages and enclosures for the birds and animals in the zoo. The carnivorous will also be separated from the herbivorous, he said. The occupancy at the cottages and dormitories at Bondla zoo, frequented by nature lovers, is high, he added.
