Flights cancelled ahead of Spanish strike

Travellers are facing cancellations and delays as Spanish workers begin a 24 hour strike tomorrow (September 29).

Ryanair has cancelled all domestic flights and most international flights to Spain. The airline will allow hand luggage only on all flights that do operate.

The budget airline has blamed what it calls "the failure of the Spanish government to ensure minimum service guarantees for non-Spanish airlines’ flights". It had hoped to operate a full service of hand-baggage only flights.

Cancelled flights include routes from East Midlands, Edinburgh, London Gatwick, Luton and Stansted to various Spanish destinations.

EasyJet has cancelled some flights and warned of disruption to others. It has offered clients the chance to change to an alternative flight within five days of travel.

British Airways has also predicted delays and cancellations, while Iberia said it would run 35% of flights.

The general strike is in protest against austerity cuts by the Spanish government.
