Flight delays: DGCA spells out criteria for compensation
The Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on 5th August issued Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR), Section 3- Air Transport, listing the new directive on compensation to flyers in case of flight delays, cancellation or being denied boarding. The CAR will come into effect from August 15, 2010. DGCA had put up a draft proposal in July this year and it was open for objections and suggestions.
According to a report in The Hindu Business Line, the final directive states that protection will be provided to passengers travelling not only on scheduled flights but also on non-scheduled flights and foreign carriers operating to/ from India. The compensation will be paid in cash, by bank transfer, or with the signed agreement of the passenger in the form of a travel vouchers, apart from offering the passenger the choice of refund of the air ticket at the price it was purchased or a flight to the first point of departure, among other options.
