Air India to introduce Chennai-Agatti service from September 24, 2010

According to a PTI report, Air India plans to introduce a service connecting Chennai and Agatti in Lakshadweep from September 24, 2010. The proposed flight will be operated six days a week, using an ATR aircraft. The commencement of service between Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep is part of the airline's objective to enhance air connectivity to the remote areas of the country.

Agatti will be the 64th destination on the domestic network of Air India.

The flight will operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday on the Chennai-Kochi-Agatti-Kochi-Chennai route, while on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday the airline will operate on the Chennai-Bengaluru-Agatti-Bengaluru-Chennai route.

Besides, Air India also plans to deploy jet aircraft in place of turbo-props to operate services across Tier-II cities. As a part of this exercise, the airline will operate one 122-seater A 319 aircraft to service New Delhi- Dehradun sector instead of an ATR from September 22, 2010. Similarly, the flight on the Delhi-Kanpur-Allahabad- Delhi route will be upgraded and operate with a 70-seater CRJ aircraft.
